In a puppy the answer is not under the tail but on the belly: the male has a small opening a few centimetres behind...
Dog names by letter
Choosing a dog's name is easier when you start from a letter. This list runs through the alphabet from A to Z, with male and female names for each letter.
Many breeders give each litter a letter: puppies from the A litter get a name beginning with A, the next litter a name with B. France goes further — a dog registered with the LOF must be named after the letter of its birth year. There is no such rule in the UK or Ireland, so here the letter is a way to narrow the field, not an obligation.
Two things that help: two syllables are learned faster than four, and the name should not sound like a command — «no», «sit» or «stay».
Which letter for which year
France turns this habit into a rule: a dog registered with the LOF must be named after the letter of its birth year, and 2027 is the year of C. It is the birth date that counts, not the paperwork — a puppy born on 31 December 2026 keeps the B.
| 2020 | R | 2026 | B |
| 2021 | S | 2027 | C |
| 2022 | T | 2028 | D |
| 2023 | U | 2029 | E |
| 2024 | V | 2030 | F |
| 2025 | A | 2031 | G |
Six letters never come up: K, Q, W, X, Y and Z are left out, because they offer too few usable names. Twenty letters remain, hence a twenty-year cycle — the B of 2026 had not come round since 2006.
No UK or Irish registry asks for any of this, and those six letters are yours to use. The table is still worth knowing if your puppy comes from a French pedigree, or if your breeder keeps the same habit. And if you want a long C list rather than an A–Z index, we have one: 212 dog names starting with C for 2027, male and female, with the B list for 2026 and the A list for 2025.
Puppy on the way? What to have ready
The name is settled. These are the six departments that matter on day one.
- Bowls — stainless steel over plastic, and raised for a large dog
- Bed — measured on the dog stretched right out, washable cover
- Leads and collars — the collar carries the tag, the harness takes the pull
- Toys — chosen for the jaw, not for the look
- Treats — the reward that trains, given within the second
- Puppy shampoo — pH for thin skin, from eight weeks

Pick it once, then keep it
Once chosen, the name is used the same way every time — no shifting nicknames, and better in good moments than when telling the dog off. A puppy learns its name within days if it hears it alongside food, play and attention.
